Knee joint is the largest and the most complex joint of the human body. Whole body movement and the mobility are based on the health of your knee joint. This joint probably bears the highest shocks during your regular day activities. Its health is taken for granted most of the times. But with the passage of time the knee pain is getting common especially at the older age.

It is very important to maintain a good knee joint health so that you feel younger for the longer time period. Taking care of the knee joint actually started when we feel something is wrong and we feel pain. This is the biggest mistake we made and take our health for granted. You have to take action before the start of any deterioration in the joint. It would work in the right direction otherwise you will take action to lower the joint pain rather than making it age proof.

Knee Anatomy

It is very important to know about this joint. How it works?

Knee joint is the central point of the leg where bones of the lower and the upper legs meet. It acts like a hinge with the help of which you walk, jump, sit and squat. In fact it is very difficult for you to move if this joint is not working well.

It consists of three bones named as femur, tibia and patella.

  1. Femur is a thigh bone.
  2. Tibia is the shin bone or the front bone of the lower leg.
  3. Patella is actually knee cap or thick triangular bone which sits over the other bones.

Bone ends are covered with the cartilage layer which absorbs all shocks and glide easily when they move.

Between the two bones femur and tibia connective tissues are present which disperse the body weight across joint and reduces friction. These connective tissues are two crescent shaped pads named as

  • Lateral meniscus ( situated outside of the knee )
  • Medial meniscus ( situated inside of the knee )

The anatomy of the knee joint is much more elaborated and complex but here we discuss about some major factors to make it understandable for you.

As you grow older the muscles and the ligaments present in the knee joint get weaker. Knee joint bears immense pressure throughout its life span. This pressure with the regular wear and tear worsens the condition.

As we discussed earlier in the anatomy two crescents shaped cartilage pads lateral meniscus and medial meniscus start deteriorating. Same is in the case with the articular cartilage protecting the ends of the leg bones where they meet at the knee.

When the cartilage present in the knee deteriorates, bones start rubbing against each other which creates pain, stiffness and swelling.
