Benefits and Side Effects of Herbal Medicine in Sports

7. Yerba Mate

Yerba mate is an evergreen plant cultivated in South America. It is commonly used as tea among the local individuals. The yerba mate oral supplement is found to be quite effective in fat burning and improving the overall metabolism of the obese patients. However, some researchers have warned that it can cause higher blood pressure and even confusion in some people.

8. Saffron

Saffron is globally used in culinary due to its numerous benefits. It is a dried stamen of the Crocus sativus flower. It is considered the most expensive herb by weight. Saffron is also used in the treatment of inflammation, muscle tension, and depression. It contains several important active ingredients including esters, terpene alcohol, and terpenes.

However, the researchers showed that the saffron supplements may not improve resistance exercise performance of the participants. It can also lower the blood factors such as lactate dehydrogenase and TNF-α in the sedentary women.

Furthermore, a high dose of saffron can cause serious side effects which can prove fatal, if it exceeds 20g per day. So, the researchers recommend taking saffron supplementation with extreme precaution.

9. Tribulus Terrestris

Recently, the Bulgarian athletes claimed that their success in the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta was due to the Tribulus Terrestris herb. For this reason, this herb has become a hot topic for research these days. So, the researchers provided this extract supplements to the weightlifters and athletes. They found out that this herb can increase the testosterone levels in men quite significantly. It increases the levels of luteinizing hormone in the body due to which the testosterone production is simulated. Moreover, the participants gained greater muscle anabolism after consuming the extract supplements.

However, some other studies suggest that the Tribulus Terrestris extracts do not enhance the body strength or testosterone levels within a short time frame. Still, the strength sports athletes use Tribulus Terrestris extracts for their exercise regiments due to minimal side-effects.

After thorough research, the researchers concluded that ginseng and caffeine can stimulate the central nervous system and enhance the brain functioning. However, it is important to take other herbal medicines under the supervision and with precaution. To avoid side-effects of any herbal medicine, it is recommended to consult your doctor before taking any herbal medicine yourself.
